Why Not Just Use Copilot? A Guide for Marine Businesses

We hear a version of this question every week from marine business owners: "We already pay for Microsoft 365. Copilot is built into Outlook. Why would we need anything else?"

It deserves a straight answer, because the AI tools on the market are more different from each other than the marketing suggests, and the businesses getting real results from AI in 2026 have figured out something the ads leave out. They run a mix.

Here's the map.

What these tools actually are

Microsoft Copilot is an AI layer built into software you may already use: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Windows. That placement is the whole strategy. Copilot's real strength is that it can see your files, email, chats, and meetings inside your Microsoft account and act on them without you switching apps. Draft in Word, summarize the Teams call, turn meeting notes into action items. For a company that lives entirely in Microsoft 365, that convenience is real, and the enterprise security and governance controls around it are a legitimate differentiator.

Here's the part the marketing skips: Microsoft licenses most of the intelligence. Copilot has run primarily on OpenAI's models since launch, and Microsoft now runs Anthropic's Claude models inside Copilot as well, alongside its own in-house models. Microsoft's contribution is the orchestration, the data access, and the interface. That's valuable engineering, and it also means the plain translation of "Copilot is the best AI for work" is this: Copilot is the most convenient way to point someone else's AI at your Microsoft files. Step outside the Microsoft apps and the value thins out fast. Head-to-head tests routinely show ChatGPT and Claude ahead on open-ended reasoning, writing, and coding whenever the task lives outside an Office file.

ChatGPT is the general-purpose assistant with the broadest feature set: chat, voice, image generation, custom GPTs, agents that browse and take actions. If you want one versatile tool that does a bit of everything and does most of it well, this is the lane OpenAI owns.

Claude is the specialist for deep work. Long documents, careful analysis, writing that sounds like a person wrote it, and the most reliable coding of the three. Anthropic has also pushed furthest on agents that carry sustained, multi-step work through to done. Ask the heaviest AI users you know, and most of them keep Claude open for the thinking-intensive tasks even when they use something else for quick questions.

Three different kinds of things

Notice what that table is really telling you. These are three different kinds of product wearing the same "AI assistant" label. Copilot is an interface over models built elsewhere. ChatGPT and Claude are the front doors of the two labs that build the frontier models everyone else licenses. Comparing them head to head is already a category error, which is why the "which one is best" debates go in circles.

And there's a third category the debate usually misses entirely: the platform layer where AI agents actually run your operations, day after day, across every system your business touches. That's where Boatwork sits.

Keep Copilot for what it's good at, if you're already paying for Microsoft 365: drafting in Word, cleaning up the inbox, summarizing the meeting you skipped.

Use Claude or ChatGPT for the heavy thinking: the contract you need to understand before you sign it, the estimate you need to get right, the analysis of last season's numbers.
