Proper winterization protects your boat from damage during storage. Even in South Florida, seasonal storage requires preparation.
Engine Winterization
Outboards
- Run to operating temperature
- Change oil and filter while warm
- Add fuel stabilizer, run 10 minutes
- Flush cooling system
- Fog engine with fogging oil
- Disconnect and store battery charged
Inboards/Stern Drives
- Change engine oil and filter
- Change transmission fluid
- Drain and flush cooling system
- Fog cylinders
- Close seacocks
🌡️ Florida Note
Even where freezing is rare, moisture and humidity damage stored engines. Fogging oil and fuel stabilizer are essential.
Fuel System
- Fill tank to 90-95% (prevents condensation)
- Add fuel stabilizer
- Run engine to circulate treated fuel
Freshwater Systems
- Drain freshwater tank and water heater
- Pump non-toxic antifreeze through lines
- Empty holding tanks
Exterior
- Wash and wax (wax guide)
- Clean and treat canvas and vinyl
- Cover with breathable cover
- Remove drain plugs
Interior
- Remove all food and perishables
- Clean all surfaces
- Open compartments for air circulation
- Place moisture absorbers
Electrical
- Turn off all switches
- Remove batteries or use maintenance charger (battery guide)
- Clean terminals
